Communicating in 2025 – Tips for Business Owners & Leaders
Last year’s volatile and uncertain market environment was hard on businesses. Nearly a month into the new year, the situation seems likely to persist. For some business leaders, the 2025 long goal shifted from survival to accelerating growth despite the persisting uncertain times. While numerous solutions to accelerate growth and navigate the currently faced challenges exist, communication remains a critical success factor regardless of approach.
Sunny Bindra’s remarks at the Executive Thought Leadership Forum hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce Kenya (BCCK) in September 2024, concur that effective communication is crucial for navigating such turbulent times. He noted that successful leaders were those who remained calm, focused on long-term goals, and communicated clearly, even in the face of uncertainty.
Usually when crises strike, many leaders knee jerk to fear-driven responses often communicated and executed ineffectively. However, these reactions often worsen situations by fostering confusion, eroding trust, and diminishing morale.
Ideally business leaders must act deliberately and communicate with transparency, consistency, and a forward-thinking approach. This ensures that all stakeholders understand the situation and the rationale behind decisions, prevents speculation and misalignment and inspires hope and confidence in a clear path forward.
The impact is evident with several well-documented cases evidencing the benefit of well-thought-out communication in the face of a crisis. For instance, in Japan, when the 2011 Tsunami hit and disrupted major supply chains, Toyota’s leadership maintained open communication with its global network. They provided clear updates on the situation, recovery plans, and alternative production strategies, preserving their reputation and stakeholder confidence.
In 2025, as business leaders we must leverage our communications to support our acceleration goals. Some practical tips to consider include:
1. Being Transparent, Even When It’s Difficult: Hidden truths or mixed messages only breed mistrust. Despite the fear, clearly outline the situation, the impact, and the steps being taken to address it.
2. Show Empathy and Support: Acknowledge the challenges your employees, customers, and partners are facing. Genuine empathy always fosters loyalty and trust.
3. Maintain Consistent Messaging: Align your communication with your brand values. Consistency reinforces your organization’s identity and builds trust amongst internal and external stakeholders.
4. Focus on the Long Term: Sunny Bindra’s advice to think beyond immediate challenges – “to focus on the next 100 years, not just the next quarter”—remains pertinent. Articulate a vision that inspires confidence and hope.
5. Adapt to Changing Realities: Use every crisis as an opportunity to refine your strategy. Agility in communication ensures that you remain relevant and proactive.
Amid these challenges, I remain optimistic about the future. Regardless of the specific strategies pursued, the foundation for success lies in strategic communication. It is through clear and purposeful communication that organizations can effectively implement growth initiatives, strengthen stakeholder relationships, build trust, and position themselves for long-term success.
I believe that if it doesn’t kill you, it’ll make you stronger – though the rain may continue to fall in 2025, deliberate, empathetic, and visionary communication can be the foundation for resilient growth. Let’s communicate with clarity and purpose – as leaders, our words will shape the outcome of this incoming year.
